A true gem of Powhatan County, Powhatan State Park, is on just around 1,500 acres of land backing up to the James River. This park offers 12 miles of multi-use trails, river access for fishing, boating, kayaking, and other water sports, 9 miles of trails for horseback riding, 3 picnic shelters, a playground, and a variety of options for overnight camping.

If you’re someone who likes to get out on the water but don’t own your own gear, check out Maiden Voyage Outfitters for equipment rentals. Maiden Voyage Outfitters provides equipment for adventures (tubing, kayaking, etc.), transportation to Powhatan State Park from their meet-up location, and handles all safety information and gear.

Fighting Creek Park is a staple for locals and visitors alike. Not only is this park home to some of the county’s athletic fields/facilities, but it also has miles of wooded trails, a playground, gardens, and picnic shelters. The Powhatan County Public Library is also conveniently located right next door to the park and can be accessed by the trail system.

Are you more interested in hunting and fishing? Powhatan is also home to our very own Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Hunters and anglers will find a diverse set of game species on the Powhatan WMA and four ponds, and two small lakes stocked with fish. Just make sure you have the proper licensing and are aware of all WMA regulations.

Whether you’re a seasoned player, beginner, or a junior in golf, Independence Golf Club has something for everyone. This public golf course in Powhatan County features a double driving range, putting greens, a 9-hole Bear Course for traditional, disc, and foot golf, and an 18-hole Championship Course. While you’re on the property, you’ll find a variety of other businesses including a restaurant, coffee shop, adventure park, pro shop, BBQ shack, and more!

Located on the Independence Golf Club property, Canopy Adventure Park is one of Powhatan’s most unique recreational experiences. This adventure park offers 2.5 hours of challenge on 4 unique ropes courses. Push your physical and mental limits as you conquer their aerial bridges, cargo nets, and zip lines high up in the trees.

Mill Quarter Plantation Golf Course is another public golf course in the county that features an 18-hole Championship Course with modern practice facilities.
